The Megger 550005B Single-phase Megger – Megger TTR Transformer Turns Ratio Tester measures the turns ratio and exciting current of windings in power, potential and current transformers. Deviations in turns ratio readings indicate problems in one or both windings or the magnetic core circuit.

The Megger TTR test set aids in identifying:

* Internal faults or tap-changer defects in step regulators as well as in transformers.

The single-phase 550005B, hand-cranked model measures highly sensitive turns ratios of up to 129.99:1 with accuracy of ±0.1%. An optional auxiliary transformer extends the ratio range to 329.99:1. The TTR set operates on the principle that the voltage ratio of the transformer at no load is practically equal to the true turns ratio. The major source of error in a transformer is a primary impedance drop due to magnetizing current, which is kept to a minimum by excitation at a fraction of rated voltage. By employing a design that meets both of these conditions along with the use of a null balance system, the turns ratio of a transformer can be determined accurately. When measuring the turns ratio of distribution and power transformers, the accuracy is well within 0.1%.

The single phase model 550005B is primarily used for testing single-phase power and distribution transformers, for low-ratio readings up to 129.99:1, or up to 329.99:1 with an auxiliary transformer. It can be used to test three-phase transformers by connecting and testing each phase separately.

The Megger TTR20 is an automatic, hand-held, battery operated transformer turns ratio test set. The Megger TTR20 is used to measure the turns ratio, excitation current and polarity of windings in single- and three-phase distribution and power transformers (tested phase by phase), potential & current transformers, and tapped transformers.
The unique design of the TTR20 allows the user to operate the test set while holding it in one hand. It effectively eliminates the user from having to kneel or bend down to operate the instrument and speeds up testing time. Realizing the extreme environments in which the TTR20 must operate, special attention has been paid to making it extra rugged, with a high impact, shock resistant case, yet incredibly lightweight at a mere 870 g (1.9 lbs). Its design makes this instrument well suited for use in a variety of harsh environments. The TTR20 is particularly suited for testing in substations, transformer-manufacturing environments, and meter shops. It features a high-contrast, backlit LCD screen which can be seen in bright or ambient light.  TheMegger TTR20 measures a high turns ratio of 10,000:1 accurately with the lowest excitation voltage. The excellent repeatability of the TTR20 helps the users to determine the condition of transformers under test.
